Director David Fincher said "It's dark, it's romantic, and it also deals with mortality in a pretty unflattering way. Button is born in 1919 - with the film itself beginning in World War I, traveling around the world and carrying on all the way through to the year 2000."

The Day the Earth Stood Still - December 2008

The Day the Earth Stood Still - December 2008

The 2008 remake about an alien and his indestructible robot will star (Keanu Reeves) as Klaatu, Jennifer Connelly as Helen Benson, (Jaden Smith) as Jacob, and (Kathy Bates). Gort has not been cast at this time and will most likely be created using FX.
The remake of (The Day the Earth Stood Still) will supposedly remain true to the original movie, however there is a chance the remake will more likely remain true to the short story upon which the 1951 movie is based. In either case the alien 'weaponry' seems to have been upgraded. In addition to a city going dark, and a very brief look at the new Gort, the film trailer shows a cloud of black smoke, capable of rapid movement and disintegrating matter on contact.
In the 1951 movie, Gort is described as one of a race of robots created by the planets to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. If the 2008 remake follows the short story by (Harry Bates), "Farewell to the Master" upon which the 1951 movie is based, it will be revealed at the end of the movie by Gort himself that he is the master, and not Klaatu.

In the original movie, a flying saucer orbits Earth, and lands in Washington, DC, on the Mall. Klaatu (Michael Rennie) steps out and is shot by a jumpy soldier. Gort (Lock Martin), an indestructible robot steps out of the spacecraft and proceeds to melt all the weapons, including tanks, without harming a single human being. Later, the Earth comes to realize that Gort has used very little of his power to make this happen.
While lying on the ground, Klaatu orders Gort to stop, and is then taken by the military to a hospital from which he later escapes in order to learn more about this planet called Earth and its human inhabitants. He meets Helen Benson (Patricia Neal) and her son. Billy Benson (Billy Gray) takes Klaatu on a tour of Washington DC finally stopping in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Klaatu reads the words uttered by Lincoln many years ago and realizes that there might be hope for Earth.
When they begin to suspect him, he reveals himself, along with the news that Gort is a member of a race of super-robot enforcers invented to keep the peace of the galaxy and will destroy the Earth if provoked. Klaatu is pursued and shot and killed by the military. Before Klaatu dies, he tells Helen to go to Gort, and say these words Klaatu Barata Nikto. If she does not, Klaatu tells her Gort will destroy the Earth. Helen makes her way to the ship and finds Gort. As Gort moves towards her, she repeats the phrase over and over. Gort picks her up and takes her into the ship. Gort then retrieves Klaatus body and through their alien science, resurrects Klaatu.

Jaden Smith as Jacob, Helen's rebellious eight-year old stepson.
John Cleese as Dr. Barnhardt.

Plot Summary: "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is 20th Century Fox's contemporary reinvention of its 1951 classic. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. Henry Poole is Here - August 2008

Henry Poole is Here - August 2008

Henry Poole Is Here is a comedic drama about a disillusioned man who goes hiding in placid suburbia only to discover he cannot escape the forces of hope. Returning to the middle class neighborhood where he grew up, Henry chooses to live in indulgent isolation. Real life, however, refuses to cooperate with his plans. Nosy neighbors interrupt him with curious visits and prying questions. Then the situation escalates as a stain on Henry's stucco wall is seen to have miraculous powers. His last-ditch hideout becomes a shrine; his backyard turns into an arena for passionate debate about faith and destiny. Seeking anonymous oblivion, cynical Henry Poole instead finds himself right at the center of the human comedy. A modern-day fable, director Mark Pellington's new film investigates the unexpected wonders of the everyday. A faithless man finds hope. A hopeless man finds love. Whether backyard miracles are real or triggered by hope and belief, their personal effects are permanent.

Luke Wilson ("The Royal Tenenbaums," "Old School"), Academy Award® nominee Adriana Barraza ("Babel") and Radha Mitchell ("Finding Neverland") star in a modern day fable about the unexpected wonders of the everyday from director Mark Pellington ("U2 3D," "The Mothman Prophesies"). "Henry Poole is Here" tells the funny, poignant and uplifting story of a disillusioned man who attempts to hide from life in a rundown suburban tract home only to discover he cannot escape the forces of hope.

Henry Poole (Wilson) just wants to disappear. Shattered by circumstances beyond his control, he offers full price on a cookie cutter house in a drab, middle-class, L.A. neighborhood through his perky realtor Meg (Cheryl Hines). But just as he settles in to his indulgent isolation with a case of vodka and all the junk food he can eat, his neighbor, a well-meaning busybody named Esperanza (Adriana Barraza), drops by with a plate of homemade tamales and a whole lot of questions.

Despite his desire for solitude, Henry can't help noticing Dawn (Radha Mitchell), the beautiful young divorcée next door and her daughter Millie (Lily), an eight-year-old amateur spy who hasn't spoken a word since her parents' break-up.

Henry's self-imposed exile is shattered when Esperanza discovers a mysterious stain on Henry's stucco wall that is seen to have miraculous powers. She begins leading pilgrimages to the "holy site" and invites church officials, including her pastor, Father Salizar (George Lopez), to inspect the apparition.

Although Henry remains skeptical, he finds himself gradually drawn back towards life, especially after his silent friendship with Millie brings him closer to Dawn. As news of the apparition spreads throughout the neighborhood and his feelings for Dawn grow, Henry realizes his plan to live out his days in quiet desperation is going to be much harder than he ever imagined.

Quarantine - October 2008

Quarantine - October 2008

Screen Gems has released the movie trailer for Quarantine online. If you remember, last month we posted two viral videos which featured tape of a government shooting that happened on March 11th under the title Case 1017. It turned out that these virals were part of the viral marketing campaign for Quarantine, John Dowdle’s American remake of Spanish horror film [rec]. The film follows a TV news crew which gets trapped with a hazmat crew in a CDC quarantined apartment building which has been infected by something unknown. When the quarantine is eventually lifted, the only evidence of what happened is the news crew’s videotape as ala Cloverfield. The movie stars Jennifer Carpenter as pictured above, who I absolutely fell in love with from the hit television show Dexter as she plays Dexter’s foul mouthed almost always inappropriate sister Debra Morgan.

Directed by John Dowdle
Produced by Drew Dowdle and Glenn Gainor
Written by John Dowdle and Drew Dowdle
Genre: Drama / Horror / Thriller
Release Date: October 17, 2008

Casts and Characters:
  • Johnathon Schaech as Fletcher
  • Jennifer Carpenter as Angela
  • Joey King as Briana
  • Jay Hernandez as Jake
  • Columbus Short as Wilensky
  • Marin Hinkle as Kathy
  • Rade Serbedzija as Yuri
  • Steve Harris
  • Greg Germann as Lawrence
  • Denis O'Hare as Randy
  • Andrew Fiscella as Officer McCreedy
  • Bernard White as Bernard
  • Stacy Chbosky as Elise
  • Jermaine Jackson as Nadif
  • Sharon Ferguson as Jwahir
  • Ronnie Lewis Jr. as Officer Lewis

Television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units. They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, internet, televisions and cell phone access have been cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew's videotape.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine May 2009

X-Men Origins: Wolverine May 2009

Set seventeen years before X-Men, the film will focus on Wolverine's violent past, and his early encounters with William Stryker. The Weapon X program and his interactions with other mutants will be explored, including his complex relationship with Sabretooth / Victor Creed.
Using several resources that include the Marvel Comics lore, along with the more recent Weapon X graphic novels by Frank Miller, "Wolverine" mixes action with an origin story about how Logan emerged from a barbaric experiment as an indestructible mutant with retractable razor-sharp claws.

Directed by Gavin Hood
Produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, Ralph Winter, Hugh Jackman and John Palermo
Written by David Benioff, James Vanderbilt, Scott Silver, Skip Woods and David Ayer
Genre: Action / Drama / Fantasy / Sci-Fi / Thriller
Release date: May 1, 2009

Casts:
  • Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine
  • Troye Mellet plays the young Logan
  • Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed / Sabretooth
  • Danny Huston as William Stryker
  • Lynn Collins as Kayla Silver Fox
  • Daniel Henney as David North / Agent Zero
  • Will.i.am as John Wraith / Kestrel
  • Taylor Kitsch as Remy LeBeau / Gambit
  • Dominic Monaghan as Barnell
  • Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool

Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan, the mutant who eventually becomes Wolverine and sometimes member of the X-Men. "Origins" hints at a prequel of sorts, allowing us to look back at the origins of Wolverine and the shadowy Mutant X program. Die-hards may raise an eye brow at the timing of Gambit's (Taylor Kitsch) introduction to the Marvel film world. However, much like Wolverine, he has a cult-like following (albeit smaller), questionable origins, and the Marvel franchise was running out of options as to when to bring Gambit into the fold. If played true-to-form, look for Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) to steal the show and reappear in his own spin-off at some point in the future.

Righteous Kill - September 2008

The cast also features hip-hop superstar Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson (Get Rich or Die Tryin').

After 30 years as partners in the pressure cooker environment of the NYPD, highly decorated Detectives David Fisk and Thomas Cowan should be ready for retirement, but aren't. Before they can hang up their badges, they are called in to investigate the murder of a notorious pimp, which appears to have ties to a case they solved years before.

Like the original murder, the victim is a suspected criminal whose body is found accompanied by a four line poem justifying the killing. When additional crimes take place, it becomes clear the detectives are looking for a serial killer, one who targets criminals that have fallen through the cracks of the judicial system. His mission is to do what the cops can't do on their own -- take the culprits off the streets for good. The similarities between the recent killings and their earlier case raise a nagging question: Did they put the wrong man behind bars?

Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simpering (sic) with jealousy but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.
