A college professor (Richard Jenkins) travels to New York City to attend a conference and finds a young couple living in his apartment. Ashley lost her mother about a year ago and hasn't been able to deal with her grief. She learns of tradition in Japan called "Obon" where the spirit of departed loved ones can be brought home for a visit. Ashley brings home something, but it is not the ghost of her mother.
